The Delhi Environment Minister, Majinder Singh Sirsa, recently announced that all high-rise buildings, commercial complexes, hotels, airports, and construction sites must install anti-smog guns to tackle air pollution in the city. During a recent meeting, the Delhi government asked the relevant authorities to provide a detailed list of existing and under-construction high-rise buildings subject to the new pollution control norm of installing anti-smog guns. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) have been asked to prepare the list. As fifty percent of Delhi’s pollution comes from within the city, the government is seeking actions to address it first.

The city’s pollution crisis was one of the major issues highlighted during the Delhi election. The newly elected government is taking various measures to curb the rising pollution levels. These actions include the government’s plan to have environment-friendly vehicle alternatives in airport premises.
By 2026, around 10,000 electric vehicles will be introduced in Delhi. Additionally, the government aims to reduce landfill waste and develop parks and forests on cleaned landfill sites.
Cloud seeding will also be adopted as a potential measure to combat pollution during peak smog months. A collaborative effort will be made with leading institutes like IIT Delhi and Delhi colleges to control pollution.
While anti-smog guns and water sprinklers can help manage pollution temporarily, these are not long-term solutions. Therefore, Bhavreen Kandhari, an environmentalist, has emphasised that the government should focus on controlling emissions effectively. It must address the significant sources of pollution, such as industries, construction activities, and fossil fuel plants running in the city.
Implementing anti-smog guns in high-rise buildings throughout Delhi is a positive step towards combating the city’s air pollution crisis.
